For one last case study of data analytics, I would like to point to any number of fast food restaurants. You will find that in most establishments there is a computer monitor with a ticker displaying the amount of time it takes to fill orders. In addition to the timer that the store has, there are timers in additional stores that are also being shown on the monitor. Each store in an area is competing with other neighboring stores. A store is judged based on how it did relative to the average of other stores, with the assumption being that each store should be as fast as the average, and if they are not, they need to pick up their times. This is a good example of data analytics used correctly, mainly because this problem is far more complicated than it might seem. For example, how does McDonald’s know how long it should take to fill an order? Where did it get its base measurement from, and then how did it fine tune this number for each region of the United States. The answer lies in the data collection and how it was computed. From the simple average time it takes to complete an order, McDonald’s can then give this as a measure to each store in the United States. They then adjust this number based on neighboring stores, as different parts of the country move at different speeds. For example, New York City McDonald’s are kept to a tighter standard than McDonald’s in rural parts of the country. There is an expectation that businesses operate faster in large cites, and McDonald’s has taken this into account when figuring out the average time to complete an order. This is the type of tweak to implementing big data that is required, and distinctly an ability that humans have over machines. It was humans who came up with the idea that different pars of the country should have different time requirements, and it had to be a human because a computer would not understand why parts of the country were so far from the average.
